I am sitting in a room is a moving study of the seated position by four poetic clowns, based on the eponymous text by American composer Alvin Lucier. This text, in its spoken form, simultaneously serves as both the raw material and the execution instructions. The choreographic work employs the same dual process, using Lucier’s musical composition both as a score, a guiding thread, and as a set of instructions.
Just as the acoustic properties of a space shape and modify sound, the movement material is smoothed, altered, and distorted through multiple repetitions until it becomes unrecognizable. The text turns into sound, a prose paragraph becomes music. Throughout the performance, the seated position is explored in its various possibilities. It undergoes a series of transformations, sometimes becoming sculptural, performative, or even danced. The study of sitting focuses on the distribution of weight and body mass in both individual and collective contexts.
To me, this piece is centered on the complicity that can exist between individuals, and in these troubled times, it highlights the necessity of sharing and mutual support.

I am sitting in a room different from the one you are in now. I am recording the sound of my speaking voice, and I am going to play it back into the room again and again until the resonant frequencies of the room reinforce themselves. In this way, any semblance of my speech, with perhaps the exception of its rhythm, is destroyed. What you will hear then are the natural resonant frequencies of the room, articulated by speech. I regard this activity not so much as a demonstration of a physical fact, but more as a way to smooth out any irregularities my speech might have.
— Alvin Lucier
I am sitting in a room is a piece imbued with charm, gentleness, and originality, with nods to burlesque and clowns. The magic woven by a musical composition written in 1969 by Alvin Lucier unfolds in a decidedly bizarre form.
