Salt Circle

Salt Circle is a ritual — both a performance and an installation — in which choreographer Joanne Leighton invites the participating public to inhabit the landscape through a circular walk along a path of salt. The salt used for Salt Circle comes from the last performance of 9000 Pas. It is the only physical trace and testimony of that piece — a cartography of space, an imprint of the dancers’ steps and the performance itself.

The act of walking creates a physical language and a tangible presence ; these actions inscribe the circle into space, just as the drawing does, by laying sea salt onto the ground. The salt circle is conceived as a piece of "choreographic land art," shaped by the footsteps and presence of its participants. In tracing this circle, the aim is to leave behind a story that resonates with the site. The installation, along with the resulting images, serves both as an act and a memory — a witness to the performance. In this way, Joanne Leighton explores the creation of new pathways, developing a visual and theatrical language rooted in walking, circular movement, and landscape.
