THE BELFORT VIGIL BOOK

From 18 September 2011 to 17 September 2012, 731 inhabitants (or visitors) from Belfort responded to the unprecedented invitation Joanne Leighton. Every day throughout the year, at sunrise and sunset, they took turns to give an hour of their time to hold watch over the city from the terrace of the citadel of Belfort.

The Vigil is currently in performance, and has been mounted 10 times over a period of 10 years. A book is edited for each project, and offered to the participants of the performance.

The book recounts this unique choreographic performance, which involves - and affects - an entire population. It pays tribute to the participants and partners of the project, all of whom have witnessed through this work a fundamental part of choreographic practice : the quality of a presence.
